Is Bumble BFF Used for Cheating? Friends App or Dating App

"It's only Bumble for friends." How to tell the friends app from the dating app, what Bumble says about BFF, and what you can check from outside.

You saw the word Bumble on your partner's phone. An icon on the second screen, maybe, or a notification that slid away before you could read it. You asked, and the answer came easily: "It's only for friends."

That can be perfectly true. It's also the easiest thing to say, and for once part of the answer can be checked.

Short answer: Bumble's friends product is real and widely used, and being on it while in a relationship is not cheating. The useful question is which app is on the phone. In the US, Canada and Mexico, BFF is now its own app, and Bumble's help center says "BFF Mode is no longer available in the Bumble app". If the app you saw there is the dating one, "it's only for friends" needs a better explanation.

This guide covers how the two apps differ, how to work out which one you saw, why people in relationships use BFF, and what you can check from the outside.

Two apps, not one

Start with what the App Store itself shows.

For years, friends mode lived inside the Bumble app, right next to dating. That's where the "it's just for friends" answer comes from, and back then you couldn't check it from the icon alone.

In the US, Canada and Mexico, that's over. Bumble's help center says: "BFF Mode is no longer available in the Bumble app", and members there are told to "download our new standalone BFF app". Outside those three countries, Bumble says members "can still connect with friends using BFF mode", so the dating app can still hold a friends profile there.

Bumble Bizz, the networking mode, is gone as well: "Bumble Bizz is no longer available".

Which one did you see?

Everything turns on this, and a half-second glance at a screen isn't much to go on. If what you caught was a text with a code in it, see what a Bumble verification text means instead.

This table applies in the US, Canada and Mexico. Elsewhere, Bumble still offers BFF mode inside the dating app, so the icon alone does not settle it.

If you aren't sure which one you saw, you don't have to guess. The names are different, and so are the icons. Asking "is that BFF or Bumble?" is a fair and simple question, and someone on the friends app has no reason to mind it.

Why someone in a relationship ends up on BFF

Adults in relationships use friendship apps, and the reasons are usually dull in the best way.

They moved to a new city. They're looking for people to do things with.

Friends drifted after marriage or children. It happens to almost everyone, and rebuilding a social circle takes effort.

They work from home. Fewer chances to meet people.

They want company for a specific activity. Running, climbing, board games, parents' groups.

They were curious. Installed, looked at twice, forgotten.

Being on a friendship app is not a sign of anything.

When "it's for friends" does not add up

Seeing that name on a partner's phone is a jolt, and you aren't being paranoid for wanting to understand it. Still, most of what surrounds it is noise.

Ordinary, all of it: BFF is on their phone. They met a new friend through it. They chat on it in front of you. The app is old.

What deserves a question:

  • The app on the phone is the dating app, not BFF (US, Canada, Mexico).
  • They never mentioned the app or anyone met through it.
  • They chat on it only when alone.
  • The explanation changes when you ask a second time.
  • The app disappeared the day after you asked.

None of these proves cheating. But the first item on that list is different from the rest: it's the only one that is a fact you can verify. The others are impressions.

What you can do about it, and what to leave alone

The last two are there so you can see why they're bad ideas. A fake profile makes you the one who lied. Going through a phone in secret gives you scraps you can't mention without explaining how you got them, and in some places it's a legal problem too. If you're tempted anyway, read our piece on why we wouldn't loyalty test a partner before you build that profile.

Checking for a Bumble dating profile from the outside

This is the one app in this series where an outside check answers part of the question, and that check is what CheatEye does. It searches Tinder from a first name, an age, a gender and a location, with an optional photo, and its other-apps option runs the same search on Bumble's dating side, along with Hinge, Happn and OkCupid. When a profile is found, the report shows what's on it, starting with the bio and the photos. For a Tinder profile it also gives the last activity and the last location used. Your partner isn't notified, and nobody touches their phone. A search starts at $17.90 for Tinder, and the other-apps option that includes Bumble is $12.90.

What it won't do: it can't see BFF activity or friendships, it doesn't read messages on either app, it doesn't search by phone number or email, and it gives no live location.

How to read the result:

  • A dating profile is found. The "friends only" explanation does not cover it. It may still be an old profile, so look at the photos, and ask before you conclude. Bumble also lets users hide their profile, so a visible one is at least not hidden.
  • No dating profile is found. That supports the friends explanation, but it is not a certificate. A profile can be snoozed, in Incognito mode, or set to another area. A paid plan leaves a trace elsewhere, so see how a Bumble charge appears on a statement if you share an account.

Either way, you get a fact to bring to a conversation, not proof of an affair. If it's his profile you're wondering about, our guide to whether a boyfriend is on dating apps covers the other methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bumble BFF a dating app? No. Bumble describes it as being "about exactly that, friends", and it's listed on the App Store as a separate app from Bumble's dating app.

Does Bumble still have a BFF mode inside the dating app? Not in the US, Canada or Mexico. Bumble's help center says "BFF Mode is no longer available in the Bumble app" there. In other countries it still exists.

Can you use Bumble BFF while in a relationship? Yes. It's a friendship app, and many of its users are in relationships.

Is Bumble BFF used for cheating? The friends app isn't designed for it. The more common problem is a dating profile being explained as "just for friends". Checking which app is installed, and whether a dating profile exists, separates the two. And whether a dating profile counts as cheating at all is a question we answer on its own page.

Is finding Bumble on a partner's phone proof of cheating? No. It shows that the app is installed. An old account that was never deleted is a frequent explanation, and removing the app doesn't delete the profile.

Can I check whether my partner has a Bumble dating profile? From inside Bumble, only if the app happens to show you their profile. From outside, a dating profile search can look for it using a first name, an age and a location.
