Social Catfish Review: Is It Legit and What Does It Cost? (2026)

Social Catfish is a real company, but its own site shows four different prices and its ratings have changed. What you actually pay for, checked.

Someone you met online has been warm for weeks and busy every time a video call comes up. Social Catfish keeps appearing in your searches, so you went to see what it costs. The plans page gave one price. The FAQ gave another.

Short answer: Social Catfish is a real service, and one of the best-known names for checking who you are talking to online. It is also harder to read than most reviews admit: its own site shows several different prices, and the ratings quoted across the web are out of date.

This review goes in the order you'll need it: what Social Catfish is, whether it's legit, what other reviews get wrong, what it costs according to its own pages, and whether it answers the question you actually have.

One thing to settle before you compare prices: Social Catfish tells you who is behind a photo, a name or a number. It doesn't look inside dating apps. If your real question is whether someone you already know has a dating profile, that's what CheatEye, our own tool, does: one search for $17.90, paid once. Run a search on CheatEye, or read on for the full review.

Quick verdict

What Social Catfish is, and what it is not

Social Catfish describes itself as "a people search engine" and as "an online dating investigation service based in California".

In practice, it does three things. It looks up a person from an identifier you already have. It runs a reverse image search with facial recognition. And it returns public records, linked social accounts and places where a photo appears. We look at another people search service in our BeenVerified review of price and trial.

Two things it isn't:

  • It is not a tool that logs into dating apps to check for an active profile.
  • It is not a background check you can use for hiring, housing or credit. Its site states it "is not a consumer credit reporting agency".

This difference matters more than it looks, and it's worth settling before you look at a single price. "Is this person real?" and "Is my partner on Tinder right now?" are two questions, and they need two kinds of tools.

Is Social Catfish legit?

Yes, it is a legitimate company. Whether it is transparent is another matter.

  • Is it a real company? Yes. SocialCatfish, LLC, based in Murrieta, California. Its site says it was founded in 2013.
  • Does it deliver a real product? Yes. Search reports from public data.
  • Is the price clear before you pay? No. There are four sets of prices on its own site.
  • Are its ratings good? Not today. Trustpilot shows 2.0 out of 5, and its BBB accreditation was revoked.
  • Does it tell the person you searched? No notification. Its site says the person "will not know that you've run a report".
  • Does it claim an accuracy rate? It gives no figure. It says results "can be incomplete or outdated".

Fact check: what reviews say, and what is true today

Most Social Catfish reviews are written by sites that earn a commission when you sign up. Many repeat figures that no longer hold. This is the part worth reading slowly.

A note on Trustpilot, because the numbers look contradictory at first: 58% of the reviews give 5 stars, yet the score is 2.0. The score gives more weight to recent reviews, and the ten most recent ones, from July to September 2026, all give 1 star.

What does Social Catfish really cost?

This is where the site contradicts itself. All four prices below come from Social Catfish's own pages.

What we could not verify: the price actually charged at checkout. It appears only after you run a search and enter an email address.

So the only number that counts is the one on the last screen before you pay. Four things to do when you get there:

  1. Do not rely on a review for the price, including this one. Read the amount on the checkout page.
  1. Check the length of the trial. The site says 3 days in one place and 5 days in another.
  1. Check which plan you are buying. A quarterly plan exists in its terms.
  1. Read the refund terms before you search. Its terms say refunds are not issued once a search has been run.

Two memberships, not one

This is the detail most reviews miss. Social Catfish sells two separate memberships, and one does not include the other.

Social Search is the one you need if you have a name, an email, a phone number, a username or an address. It does not let you run reverse image searches.

Image Search is the one you need if you have a photo. It does not let you search by name, email, phone, username or address. If a photo is all you have, we compare free and paid face search tools in a separate guide.

Its FAQ puts it plainly: with Image Search only, a user "will not be able to conduct reverse searches for names, emails, addresses, phone numbers, or usernames".

So before paying, decide what you are starting from. Say all you have is the number they text you from and two photos saved from their profile. The number goes through one membership, the photos through the other. With both a photo and a phone number, you may end up needing both.

Does Social Catfish work?

It depends on the question you are asking.

Is the person I am talking to using someone else's photos? Yes, this is its core use.

Who owns this phone number or email? Often, in the countries it covers.

Does this person have other public social accounts? Sometimes.

Does my partner have an active Tinder profile today? Not reliably. For that question, you can start with our free methods to find a hidden dating profile.

What is in their messages? No. No tool does this legally.

Three things sit behind those answers.

About dating apps. Its reverse image page says results "can include dating sites" and names Match, Tinder, POF, eHarmony and Hinge as examples. It does not publish a list of the apps it covers, or how it searches them. A photo found on the open web is not the same as an active profile inside an app.

About accuracy. Social Catfish gives no accuracy rate. It says: "Accuracy depends on the quality and availability of public data." Any percentage you read in a review comes from somewhere else.

What recent reviewers report (Trustpilot, July to September 2026):

  • Trial terms they found misleading, and charges higher than expected
  • Searches with no useful result, or outdated data
  • Requests to remove their own data that were not honoured

Who can use it

Geography decides a lot here, and it's rarely mentioned.

  • Countries: its FAQ says you can search for people "in any English speaking country", where local law allows it.
  • Europe: the same FAQ says you can sign up "unless you live in Europe".
  • Languages: the service and its data are built for English-speaking markets.

If the person you are checking lives elsewhere, expect little.

Social Catfish or a dating profile search?

We make CheatEye, so read this table as a competitor's own description.

Choose Social Catfish if you met someone online and want to verify their identity from a phone number, an email or a photo.

Choose a dating profile search if you already know who the person is and want to know whether they are on dating apps. On our side, when a profile is found, the report lays out the bio, the photos, the last activity and the last location, plus whether they pay for Tinder, and the person isn't notified. What you won't get from CheatEye: a search by phone number or email, messages, or a live location.

The two tools don't replace each other. One tells you who someone is. The other tells you where someone you already know has a profile. Before you pay for a tool of that second kind, see the six checks we ran on Cheaterbuster.

Five steps before the checkout page

  1. Write down what you have: a photo, a name, a number.
  1. Pick the membership that matches it.
  1. Run the free preview first. It shows a name, an approximate age and a city.
  1. Read the price and the trial length on the checkout page.
  1. Note the date, and decide in advance whether you want to keep the subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Social Catfish legit? Yes. It is a real company based in California that has operated since 2013 and delivers search reports. The concerns raised in reviews are about its pricing and its trial terms, not about whether the service exists.

Is Social Catfish a scam? No. But read the checkout page carefully: the service is a subscription that follows a short paid trial, and its own site shows several different prices.

Is Social Catfish safe to use? The person you search for is not notified. As with any people search, your main risks are financial: know what you're subscribing to before you pay.

Does Social Catfish work for Tinder? It can find a photo that also appears on the open web. It does not state that it searches inside Tinder, and it publishes no list of the dating apps it covers.

Is Social Catfish free? Only the preview is free. Full reports need a paid membership. We list the tools that are truly free in our guide to Social Catfish alternatives.

What is Social Catfish's rating? On 6 October 2026, Trustpilot showed 2.0 out of 5 on 568 reviews, and the Better Business Bureau listed the company as not rated, with its accreditation revoked.

Can I use Social Catfish in Europe? Its FAQ says you can sign up "unless you live in Europe", and that searches cover English-speaking countries.
